COURSE OBJECTIVES:

          1. To help students understand the demands of driving and the human limitations. To guide them in acquiring the insights, understanding, knowledge, thought processes and motivation that will enable them to make wise decisions in situations that could lead to impaired driving performance -- alcohol, drugs, fatigue, emotions, distractions, glare. This is accomplished by helping them learn from the expertise of others, as well as from the mistakes of others.

          2. To prepare students with at least minimum performance capabilities needed to be responsible vehicle operators, including, but not limited to: rules of the road,  how to be a good defensive driver, sharing the road, space around their vehicle, the physics and tremendous forces involved in driving, avoiding collisions, handling emergency situations, an understanding of the importance of vehicle operation and regular maintenance which are all necessary for entry into traffic in the Highway Transportation System.

          3. To help students recognize and correctly use appropriate terms and vocabulary.

These pages are an essential resource for the term. You are expected to check YOUR SCHOOL INITIALS above for your CLASS SCHEDULE, TEST DATES, FORMS, and ASSIGNMENTS to be prepared for the class. Check the information and the FAQ below for answers to other questions.

AFTER THE FIRST CLASS
Congratulations again on obtaining your permit and choosing to take the Driver Education course. All the
courses and extracurricular activities you take are important.
As you learned in the first session, this Driver Education class is far more important than you might have first thought.
There is much to learn about driving, and, as we saw, even experienced drivers have much to learn.
The course is progressive and each class builds upon information learned in the earlier sessions. As you have seen, there is much to cover this term and in each class you are expected to be prepared and participate in the class discussions, and that preparation and participation will be reflected in your final grade, and in your future.

PREPARATION FOR CLASS
We all depend upon each other to be prepared. Being unprepared slows down the class, wastes everyone's time, and sets you back. It is similar to driving to an unfamiliar destination without directions, a map or setting the GPS.     You are expected to be prepared for class.

We will be using the New York State Driver’s Manual throughout the course because  it is a good general resource, and has rules and regulations specific to New York State.
Do you know the NYS Driver’s Manual
                                             has Four very dangerous Flaws
                                                   in the NYS driving laws?

[We will also use other states, which cover some material far better]
We will also look at other important resources, videos and worksheets.

Be Prepared to Work in Class
Please use the restroom before coming to class, so as not to interrupt or miss information.
    Bring:
Your learning skills and cooperative attitude.
Your assignments and worksheets in a pocket folder for papers for the session, along with your pens/pencils.

Besides bringing the basics, being prepared for class means:
    Completing and bringing your assignments.
Reading, researching and/or completing the assignments.
Watching some videos or parts of videos.
Reading the section of the Driver's Manual.
Downloading, printing and bringing worksheets -- Create a Driver Ed folder on your computer to keep your assignments and forms.

If your printer is not working, you have some options:
Ask a friend to print it and get it to you in time to work on it and bring it in.
Put it/save it on a flash drive and print it at another location.
Use the library or computer lab
Driver Ed class time is for Driver Ed class and not Driver Ed. assignments, and especially not classwork from any other classes.
Be prepared to take spot quizzes.

Doing this in advance of the class will enhance the teaching/learning/sharing experience and everyone will get much more out of it, especially you.

WHY IS THERE A FAQ? [below]

There is much more information you need to know!
Click FAQlink below for the details
and answers to all your questions.
The FAQ was carefully created for YOU by your peers, based on common and uncommon questions accumulated from students like you, over the years. [It started as one page] It is designed to be your always-available resource, so that you can get answers quickly, any time, day or night, without waiting for class.
It also frees up valuable and limited class time that does not have to be used up answering the same questions over and over, but instead would best be used to teach safe driving.
YOU ARE REQUIRED
TO LOG 50 HOURS OF
   PRACTICE DRIVING -
15 OF THEM AFTER SUNSET
.
FOR YOUR
PRACTICE DRIVING LOG

YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FILE AND PRINT AS MANY COPIES AS YOU NEED

While you may have already started driving, keeping a log is to your advantage in keeping track of your progress with making safe turns, glare, driving in rain, fog, snow, ice and other bad weather, night driving and night driving in bad weather to fulfill the requirement.
When it comes to driving,
there is no such thing as
too much practice!
You really don't want to meet bad conditions for the first time when driving alone.

Every Sport Has Rules.

Let’s face it. Every sport has rules. Without them, there would be no game, just chaos.
Whenever people break the rules, sooner or later there are consequences. At the low end, there is the  penalty, time out, and being sidelined for games. At the extreme end, I am sure you know of some who were investigated, thrown out of the sport, lost their medals, etc. Poor judgement in all those cases.
Likewise, you also have to know the “Rules of the Road.” Not only do you have to know them, you have to live by them. There are big consequences for not following the rules, or using your best judgement.

And, aside from rules on the road, and in the library, park, and school, there are classroom rules. You know them. So let’s keep it simple and be respectful and cooperative. Your classmates have paid to be in this class, and need the information and skills just as much as you do. Your parents did not pay to have you talk, disturb others, text or fool around. By all means, ask relevant questions, and if something is not clear, let’s work together to get it clear. Likely, if it is not clear for you, it is probably not clear to others.

If your class is after school, we understand the need for refreshments. However, we are guests in the classroom. Treat it like a wilderness trail. Whatever you bring in, you take out, or put in the trash. Littering the room is disrespectful and unacceptable. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Cell Phone / Electronics Permissions

As was mentioned, your parents did not pay for you to attend this course for you to text during this course. So let us keep the purpose of the course in focus.

It is understood that using handheld devices while driving is prohibited by law. This is due to proven hazards that cause crashes. However, statistics show that even Bluetooth devices and “text to speech” and “speech to text” are unsafe while driving, even though the hands are not used, and the eyes are on the road. Check out this link on Brain Waves and Distracted Driving.

It is also understood that School Rules prohibit use of such devices during class.

Driver Education is strictly a NO phone / NO Electronics Zone.
Please notify friends and family of your day and class time and explain that you do
not want to interrupt your/our/everyone’s class.
[If you are involved in an urgent, on-going issue when you arrive at class, please inform Mr. E.]

While you may think you are here for a very long time, it is merely a drop in the bucket compared to how long it takes to grasp it all. So, use your time wisely. As in any class, you will get the most out of it when you put the most into it.

Remember, chatting in class is rude and distracting and wastes valuable instruction time. Please be respectful. However, if you have an observation or comment about the subject at hand, please raise your hand and tell the class. Private chats interrupt, so tell the class because we all would like to hear about it.

Likewise, horseplay and fooling around have no place in driving, or in this class. We will discuss this.

    GRADING / EXPECTATIONS
You are responsible for your Final Grade. The Grade is earned, not given. Your Final Grade is based on several factors that are standard for all classes: Attendance, Appropriate Behavior, Attitude, Effort, Class Participation, Worksheets, Assignments and Grades including Quizzes, Mid-Term and Final exams.
Because driving is not an open book test there are ASSIGNMENTS / WORKSHEETS for essential information on safe driving.

Seats are assigned by the teacher, and may be changed.

CLASS DECORUM
Place bags on the floor or in your desk, not on top of the desk and jackets or coats on the back of the chair. In order to pass this course, you must demonstrate a mature, responsible attitude, and earn a grade of at least 65 in both the In-car and Classroom sections.

Please be respectful and appropriate and don’t embarrass yourself in front of the class. As in driving, just “Do the right thing.” If at any time you are asked to leave, you will be marked absent and will need to make up the class.

Everyone in the class has paid to learn about safe driving, and they are all entitled to have a proper learning environment.  In class, as on the road, all of us are in it together. Our goal is safe driving. Let us share the road, and this class, in the spirit of courtesy and cooperation.
You will be using/studying the

For information about classes,  assignments, certificates, study guides and tests.
All 24 hours of classes must be  accounted for to get credit for the  required 24 hours of Lecture time.

If a class session is cancelled for any  reason, that session must be replaced. That 'Whole Class' cancellation requires a  "Replacement Day" which is either  another day of the week or extending  the term, whichever can be best worked out.
Your own Personal Absences MUST also  be made up. ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR MAKE-UPS.
There is no scheduled “make-up” session  for a personal absence. It is handled on a  case-by -case basis and you must make them up during the semester you are enrolled in.

Driving is not an open book test.
What you don't know CAN hurt you.
All  assignments must be properly completed.  The Final Grade will be INC until  everything is made up. There are no "free  passes."
